Preface
It has been compiled from various sources but chiefly from the
Khazina-e- Muhawarat (1912),by D.C.Phillott & Urdu dictionary,
Farhang-i-Asafiyya.Idioms that are not fairly common have been
omitted.Idioms are an integral part of any lexicon. Teaching of idioms
across the languages is not a new phenomenon; such studies have been
undertaken by language teachers before. It is a fact that teaching
idioms has always been very difficult for language teachers due to their
figurativeness and opacity. Urdu is rich in idiomatic expressions.

Pa ba rikab hona – To be ready to start /move.Ek paavun zameen per ek paavun rikab mey - To be ready to start
Panchwen sawaron mey naam likwana – To include oneself with others better.
Paani paani karna – To worry a person; to put to shame (make a sweat from shame)
Paani per bunyaad hona – To be unstable
Paani pher dena – To frustrate, make vain.
Paani pee pee ker kosna - To keep on cursing ( refreshing the tongue with water when it becomes dry from cursing)
Paani sey patla kerna – To worry a person
Paani marna – Said of a bad cause or a defect
Paavun bhari hona – To be with child.
Paavun phook phook ker rakhna – Being too cautious;
Pavun phaila ker sona – To sleep at ease. Lit and met.
Paavun thorh ker baitha jaana -To laze at home
Pavun dho dho ker peena –To love or worship devotedly on account of good qualities, virtues.
Paavun zameen per nah rakhna -Of pride
Paavun godh mey latkaye baithna - To have one foot in the grave.
Patha thorh ker bhagna – To escape.
Patla haal kerna – To reduce to a miserable state (of mind, body etc..)
Pather paani ho jaana – Said of a pitiful sight.
Pather parhe thumhari akal per – A curse; but lit. To hail
Pather tale sey haath nikalna – To get out of a tight place or a difficulty.
Pather chataana –To grind
Pather ka dil – Hard hearted.
Pather ki chaathi – Hard hearted.
Pather nichodna – Said of impossibilities.
Purane y murdey ukherhna – To rake up old matters.
Parchayeen sey darna – To be afraid of a shadow. A burnt child dreads cold milk.
Parchayen sey bhagna -To flee at a shadow.
Palang sey lag jana – To be laid up in bed
Palag ko laath marker kada hona - To recover from sickness.
Palethan nikaal dena –To beat to a jelly ( Palthen is dry flour sprinkled on dough that is too moist)
Panje jharh ker peechey parhna –To persecute without ceasing
Panje jharh ker lipatna – To cling to without leaving.
Potra ka ameer – Opposite to a nouveau riche [people who have recently acquired wealth](potra is a rag-mattress under infants)
Paharh toot parhna - Said of an unexpected and overwhelming calamity.
Paharh si din – A long and weary day.
Paharh si raaten – Long and weary night.
Paharh kaatna – To strive at a tedious weary task.
Paharh ka saa guzerna –To pass slowly (of time)
Paharh ho jaana – To pass slowly (of time)
Dil key phophole phorhna - Relieve one’s mind by revenge.
Pithkaar barasna – Rain curses on a person’s head.
Uske mooh per pithkaar barasti hai – He has an evil expression.
Uske mooh per noor barista hai – He has a holy expression.
Phoot photo ker rona – To burst out crying again and again.
Zaar zaar rona – To weep bitterly.
Phooti nazaron nah bhana –To hate intensely.
Phool soong ke rehna –To eat very little.
Phooley nah samaana – Not to be able to contain oneself from joy.
Pet chapati hona – Belly has become as thin as a chapati from hunger.
Pet ka bhaari – One can keep a secret.
Pet ka halka –A blab (chatter).
Pet ka kutta - Time server, one who will go to any one that feeds him.
Pet ki aag bhujaana – To satisfy one’s hunger.
Pet aant (intestine) nah munh mey daant - Said of a very old man.
Pet say baher paavun nikalna- To show one’s claws.
Pet may paavun hona – To have the claws concealed.
Pet mey choohey dorhna –To be hungry. To be in fear of detection.
Pet mey choohey kalabazi ( somersaults or acrobatic feats) khaaney lagey – To be very hungry.
Pet mey dhaadi hona – A young head on old shoulders, i.e. his beard or wisdom is inside him.
Pairon mey mundi lagaana –To sit still, not move (sarcastic)
